If you’ve been following The Girl Who Hates Working Out, you know that going to the gym for the first time can be a struggle. But it doesn’t have to be. Here are Lifesum’s tips for how get past gymtimidation and make the gym your hood.

1. Buddy Up
Workout buddies are everything. Whether it’s that you sign up with a personal trainer who can walk you through the machines and exercises and get you to feel comfortable, or drag along a friend who has more experience, or even a friend who is just as lost as you are (which can actually make for a lot of fun as you do everything wrong together); having someone you can ask questions, laugh with, or someone who will just push you, encourage you, and hold you accountable, is a huge bonus.

2. Go Late
Empty gyms are a little less intimidating. They’re quieter as most people tend to workout in the morning or around lunch, so you don’t have to feel so self-conscious, and can feel free to try and get it wrong or right until you find your own way.

3. Do a Class
Most gyms mention how advanced their classes are, which is great if you’re a newbie. Beginner classes are the perfect way to ease in, and you’ll make friends in no-time if you go regularly, meaning finding a buddy (shoutout to tip number one) should be a piece of cake.

4. Bring Music
Sound out everything else and just focus on yourself. It helps if you get to listen to music you actually like, and it improves your performance at the gym, you can’t go wrong!

5. YouTube it
It might sound stupid, but this is actually a great way to familiarise yourself with different machines and exercises. You’ll be shown the correct form for each exercise too, which will help you avoid injury.

6. Wear Clothes for Confidence
If wearing a sports bra without a t-shirt is going to make you feel self-conscious, don’t do it. If you’re not a big fan of your arms (we all have our things), cover them. Just make sure that before you leave the house (or changing room) you’re comfortable in your own skin. That’ll take you a long way in the big unknown environment.

What have you done to help get over your fear of the gym?
