We’ve all been there. It’s intimidating – all of a sudden you’re in a foreign environment surrounded by muscles and weights and you couldn’t feel more out of place. Don’t get put off, Blake Robinson from Evolve Fitness has a few tips to help you make your first gym visit a success.
1. It’s All About You
You’re at the gym for yourself, to give your body love and to make the improvements you want, so step #1 is to focus on yourself and not any of the distractions around you. People go to the gym for many reasons and they can act pretty strangely in the process, but don’t worry about them or what they’re doing, you’re in the gym for you, so focus on your goals and making yourself better with each workout.
2. Dumbbells
Dumbbells are called dumb for a reason. They’re some of the easiest tools to master quickly and yet they can be versatile enough to get you a great sweat session. Here’s a very simple circuit that will help you strengthen your core, trim any excess fat and keep you moving the whole time:
1. Single arm squat press
2. Bent over double row
3. Double chopper 30 seconds each
Start with the single arm squat press then move quickly from one exercise to the next and then the next without rest until you have completed 5 rounds of the circuit.
3. Don’t Be Shy
Ask for help, it’s ok to not know what to do. I can honestly tell you as someone who has been in the gym since he was 12 that there is always something new to learn BUT you have to make sure you ask the right person. Ask someone who works at the front desk if they have a coach/service/trainer that would be willing to show you how to adjust the machines and they may even provide a workout program for you. If you really still feel lost when you walk in each day it is a good idea to hire a personal trainer for a couple of sessions to get your footing. You don’t have to make it anything long term, make it 2 or 3 sessions so that you can get the routine under your belt and gain the confidence to rock that workout.
Now go ahead and march into the gym like you own the place – you got this.
