Fat Loss or Muscle Gain?

2 minReading time

‘I want to tone up and lose weight’ – 90% of my friends when talking about their bodies. And it makes perfect sense. We want the unwanted extra weight to disappear. Here’s the thing: most of that weight is fat. Our bodies are more toned when the fat disappears and you can see our muscles. And that sounds easy enough, but the reality is that it can be pretty hard work.

It’s hard to target fat directly through exercise, so it’s usually best to start with changing the way you eat. While you can do this through calorie counting, the tried and true method for directly addressing body fat is the keto diet.

The keto diet is a diet where you cut back drastically on your intake of carbs and sugars, and increase your intake of healthy fats. When your carbohydrate stores are low enough, your body enters a state known as ketosis, in which it starts to burn your body’s fat stores for energy instead. The result? Bye-bye body fat.

A lot of people worry about losing muscle tone when they diet, and it is possible to a certain degree, but the keto diet helps you to specifically target fat so that this isn’t a problem.

On the flip side, if you’re looking to not just maintain your muscle but to build upon it, a high protein diet is better for you.

The high protein diet is great for building muscle because they help with the growth and repair of your muscles, and prevent muscle loss. It also simultaneously helps you with burning fat, because the body has to work harder to break down protein, and because protein is more filling than carbohydrates, so you eat less.

So which of these matters most to you? For many of us, we typically start with the need for weight loss and then turn to high protein to see greater muscle definition and get a more ‘sculpted’ look,  but the truth is that either way, you’ll burn fat, you just might see faster results on keto.

Lucky for you, the Lifesum app offers both of these great diets. It guides you through everything from what to eat and how much, to how to set a pace, and gives you tons of recipes to help make sure that whichever you pick, you’ll never eat boring or tasteless food.
