Making New Year’s resolutions is easy—sticking to them? Not so much. Most people stay committed for about two weeks before slipping back into old habits. But this year is different. This year, you’re setting yourself up for success.

One of the biggest challenges is how resolutions are framed. Broad statements like “I will lose weight this year” or “I’m going to exercise more” lack the structure needed for long-term success.

Instead, follow these 8 steps to create a clear, actionable plan that keeps you on track and makes your resolutions stick.

1. Focus on One (Max Two) Health Goals

Don’t overwhelm yourself with a long list of resolutions. Choose one or two goals that will have the greatest impact on your health or the ones you feel most confident about achieving.

2. Make a True Commitment

Change starts with a strong “why.” Take a moment to reflect on why these goals matter to you. When you genuinely want change, sticking to it becomes much easier.

3. Break It into Milestones

Long-term goals feel more achievable when broken into smaller, measurable steps. Set both time-based and performance-based milestones to track progress and celebrate wins.

January: Cook 3 healthy meals per week, limit yourself to one portion per meal, and go for a morning walk four times a week.

4. Write It Down

Put your goals and milestones in writing—somewhere you’ll see them regularly. Use the “Progress Diary” feature in the Lifesum app or simply jot them down in a notebook.

5. Find a Role Model

Look for someone who inspires you—a friend, family member, or public figure whose positive energy lifts you up and motivates you to keep going.

6. Think of Yourself as a Role Model

Just as you look up to others, remember that you can inspire those around you too. Whether it’s a friend, colleague, or family member, your progress could motivate them to start their own journey.

7. Tell One More Person

Speaking your goals out loud makes them feel more real. Tell a trusted friend or loved one about your first milestone and ask for their support in keeping you accountable.

8. Reward Yourself

Celebrate your progress! Assign yourself a reward for reaching each milestone. Start with the first, and once you achieve it, choose the next one. This keeps motivation high and progress exciting.
