This fall, in a tech and food-retail first, we have been busy working with New York-based Swedish coffee culture chain, FIKA, to create four unique dark chocolates, each designed to combat a dietary deficiency specific to a New Yorkers’ diet.

As the winter approaches, we wanted to give our New York-based users a treat to carry them through the dark, cold days. We knew this treat had to be delicious, indulgent and most of all, healthy. To do this, our nutritionists analyzed anonymous data from 100,000 of Lifesum’s users in New York, and found that the typical diet lacked calcium, which is needed for strong bones, vitamin E, for healthy skin, potassium, necessary to reduce stress, and zinc, for boosting immunity. Once the deficiencies were identified, we set to work with FIKA and their chocolatier, Håkan Mårtensson, to develop the following chocolates:

Calcium Colada

Calcium Colada

designed to boost calcium intake, which contributes to bone health and strength. Flavor-wise, it is reminiscent of a pina colada cocktail.

Raw Radiance

Raw Radiance

Contains vitamin E, a fantastic antioxidant that helps to protect the body from free radicals. As well as working to prevent heart disease and to balance cholesterol, vitamin E offers a beauty boost by decreasing environmental damage to your hair, and can repair damaged skin.

Cocoa Calm

Cocoa Calm

Was created to offer a hit of potassium, and encourage relaxation. New Yorkers are constantly fast moving and on-the-go, which often contributes to stress. The analysis of our data revealed that residents were lacking in potassium, which is a known reliever of anxiety and stress.

Cleanse and Reboot

Cleanse and Reboot

chocolate is packed with zinc to support run-down immune systems, with added antioxidants from cayenne pepper and ancho chilli to elevate body temperature, which increases immune system activity.

The chocolates are a perfect addition to a dreary and busy day, especially during a little fika break. In Sweden, fika is a daily occurrence – a time to slow down, grab a coffee and something delicious.  Frida Harju Westman, our in-house nutritionist who analyzed the data, comments, “Rather than ask individuals to change their behavior and current habits, which often isn’t realistic, we wanted to work with FIKA to create a set of chocolates that both address the common deficiencies and health needs of New Yorkers, while also offering a treat-like snack typically consumed during a Swedish fika. Collaborating with FIKA has enabled us to devise a unique set of data-driven chocolates that taste fantastic, while giving your body a much-needed vitamin boost.”

New Yorkers can enjoy the Lifesum FIKA Fix at FIKA’s chocolate factory & cafe in Tribeca, and boxes can be bought online here
