Ever heard of the BMI? Do you know what it is? Here’s a little information about it. It stands for Body Measurement Index, and is the number you get when you divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. It’s important because it’s an objective way of knowing if you’re overweight, underweight or healthy. We say objective because, there are some things it doesn’t know, like your body fat or body muscle, and so it can be a little misleading if used wrongly, but in general, it’s a great way to figure out overall health risk and general courses of treatment.
BMIs between 18.5 and 24.9 are classed as healthy, or normal; those from 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight, and those under 18.5 are underweight. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, between 2015 and 2016 – 71.6% of adults aged over 20 were either overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese increases the likelihood of developing a large number of health issues, so it’s good to check your BMI to get an awareness of what your health risks might be.
