How does a keto diet help me lose weight?

Many people have successfully lost weight while following the keto diet. Within the first few weeks of following a keto diet program, like the ones available in the Lifesum app, people have lost up to 10 pounds.

When your body enters ketosis, the state of burning fat stores as fuel, you release fluids that your body has been holding onto. It should be noted that when you eat carbs and sugar again, those fluids return, and your weight may rise again.

When you reduce your carb intake, hunger decreases and you’ll eat less without thinking about it. When you combine only fat and protein in a meal, it’s almost impossible to overeat, and as there is only one rule to stick to – reduced carbs – it’s also a super simple approach.

At its essence, the keto diet is a very low-carb diet that favors healthy fats rather than carbs. This means eating less pasta, crackers, and chips but filling up on avocados, olive oil, salmon, and many more delicious foods. The keto diet isn’t as difficult as it may seem, and plenty of people have seen stunning results, especially with the keto diet tool: the Lifesum app.

What can I eat on the Keto diet?

In order to coax the body into ketosis, the result of reducing carbs and burning fat for fuel rather than carbs, you need to eat less than 50 g of carbs (net carbs in the US) and instead fill up on fats.

Note: On nutrition labels in the US, net carbohydrates are equal to the total amount of carbohydrates minus the amount of fiber and sugar alcohol in food. In European nutrition labels, the number of carbs listed is the same as the number of net carbs. Because fibers do not affect blood sugar, tracking the total net carbs you consume is key.

It is important to eat a varied diet and fill it with food rich in healthy fats that will give you the sustenance and nutrients your body needs. Some of these healthy fats include: Olive oil, Avocados, Avocado oil, Salmon and other rich, fatty fishes, nuts, seeds and plenty more. Other types of food rich in fats that you can eat, preferably in moderation, on a ketogenic diet includes butter, cream, full-fat dairy products.

Eating all of these rich, fatty foods is the easy part. The not-so-easy part (for some people) is drastically reducing their intake of carbs. These foods should be VERY limited when eating keto: Pasta, rice, crackers, cookies, bread, potatoes, root vegetables, a lot of fruits (most of them contain carbs that will throw off your new diet’s balance) and beans/legumes

This new limited-carb diet can be a big shock to people; many of our favorite foods are loaded with sugars and carbs - big no-nos on keto. When you have a limited allotment of carbohydrates, it is vital to choose your carbs wisely in order to meet your daily nutrient and fiber requirement. Aim to choose vegetables with small amounts of carbohydrates, such as: Zucchini, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cucumber, Tomato, Radishes and so on.

The Lifesum app helps youtrack your carbs and net carbs to make sure you’re always on track when eating keto. Additionally, the app has three keto diet options and plenty of delicious recipes to ensure you get the correct intake of macronutrients (protein, fat, and carbs).
