Back in the early 90’s, I wonder what they thought we’d be eating in 2019. I wonder if they thought we’d be eating space-esque packets of powdered food or using apps to turn images into food.
Either way, they were wrong. Here are five foods trends expected to rule in 2019, and recipes that are perfect for them.

1. Plant-based proteins Stir Fried Tofu in a bowl with sesame and greens. Homemade healthy vegan asian meal - fried tofu.

This isn’t that much of a surprise. Reportedly 8 in 10 millennials regularly opts for vegetarian alternatives. Expect more bean and plant-based meat alternatives popping up everywhere.

2. International delights Dried Sumac, sumah or sumak on silver plate (arabic cuisine) Organic Concept.

We’re now thinking behind Chinese and Mexican food and developing a taste for Middle Eastern and African herbs and flavourings. Get ready for a lot more sumac and za’atar based recipes.

3. Seed butters  Eaten watermelon on a plate with pits

You won’t believe this, but watermelon seed butter is totally a thing. It’s a little like sesame butter and cashew butter had a baby and it’s packed full of magnesium, iron, amino acids and essential fats. Delicious.
Recipe: Blend it with water to make your own nut milk, spread it on crepes and toast, or stir it into your ice-cream.

Yes, that’s right. They’re a cheap yet rich source of protein, and already a staple in the diets of 80% of the world. Typically these come in the form of powders, and they can be used in everything from bread to cocktails.

There’s nothing new about probiotics per se, we’ve been talking and hearing about them for a while. But what is new is the fact that they aren’t just in yogurt, they’re now in water, oatmeal, and other types of food and drink.
